Although he amassed substantial land holdings at Mt Tomah and the Berambing he made “Bowen Mount” his home and family seat until he retired to Kirribilli in the late 1870's.
The house burned down on 10th January 1914. Bowen Mountain remained in the possession of the Bowen family until sold in the early 1930's to a McKellar family (an uncle of Dorothea McKellar).
Bowen Mountain is a ridge top settlement of more than 500 homes and about 1,600 people of all ages. It is located in the Hawkesbury LGA, 80 kms north west of Sydney. It is approximately 3 kms long north to south at an average elevation of 400 metres.
